About
Andrew Wittmer is a jazz saxophonist originally from Des Moines, Iowa. As a young performer his playing quickly garnered attention around the metro, leading to performances with various groups including the Nate Sparks Big Band and Des Moines Big Band, as well as leading his own ensemble, the Andrew Wittmer Quintet. His playing and contribution to the scene was recognized by the Community Jazz Center in Des Moines with the Bobby Dawson Award.
As a member of the Northwest High School Jazz Orchestra, he won two DownBeat Student Awards in 2023 and 2025. Andrew’s passion and dedication led to his selection as a finalist in the 2024 North American Saxophone Alliance High School Jazz Competition, where he placed 3rd.
Now based in East Lansing, Michigan, Andrew is earning a degree in Jazz Studies at the prestigious Michigan State University, where he studies under Erena Terakubo and Rodney Whitaker, previously studying with Walter Blanding. Andrew can be seen performing with the Michael Dease Big Band, Nate Sparks Big Band, Gathering Orchestra, and leading his own projects.
Andrew is a passionate educator, working with both private students and at workshops to help carry the tradition of the music forward. Andrew was selected as a teaching assistant for the 2026 Brevard Jazz Institute. He also maintains a private studio of saxophonists, teaching the tradition to the next generation.
